Mossimo

This name Mossimo derives from the Latin Maximus, which means ‘greatest’ or ‘largest'. The name can be shortened to Moss, Mossy, Simo, Mo, and Mimo if you want some cute nicknames.

Before applying for a dog, please take a moment to review our Adoption Information & Procedures

Some of the dogs in our program are adopted before we get to know them. Some stay longer but require several weeks to show their character. Some dogs receive additional evaluations and training by professionals if needed.

We work hard to provide as much information as possible, but the process is not perfect. Our goal is to give the dogs the best chance to stay in their home for the rest of their lives so we are genuine regarding what we know about them. For MPR, quality of our placements takes precedence over a quick turnaround.

We do our very best to update the dogs' bios as quickly as we can. In some cases, dogs are adopted before we are able to revise their listing.

Please do not contact MPR via email or messenger to inquire about a dog’s personality and/or temperament, compatibility with other pets, etc. The volunteers in charge of replying to general requests are not the same as those handling and evaluating the dogs. They will not be able to answer your questions.

Missouri Pit Bull Rescue makes no express or implied warranty, representation or promise to the age, health, breed, habits, disposition, behaviors, obedience, or safety of the dogs in our program. Our assessments are subjective and based on information we receive when selecting the dogs for our program, as well as observations and reports from our volunteers and caretakers. Adopters understand that no one can predict how a dog will act or react under all circumstances and situations.

Background Info:

Hard to believe such striking dog was found as a stray, taken to the local pound and never claimed but that's exactly what happened to Mossimo. Perhaps his large size became a burden for an unprepared owner.  Perhaps his disability was the reason he found himself unwanted.  We will never know. What we do know however, is that he is one of the coolest dog to ever land in our program. We are totally in love and so is he, lol!

Adoption Fee: $300
Breed: Presa Mix
Sex: Male
Age: 2-4 yrs
Weight: 100+ lbs

Health Condition:

While Mossimo appears to be as healthy as an ox, we have recently discovered that he is very hard of hearing, if not completely deaf.  This doesn't bother him one bit. In fact, it allows him to adapt to shelter life like a pro since he doesn't hear all the barking and chaos from the dogs around him.  On the flip side, he doesn't hear himself either, and sometimes he graces us with his baritone voice, like it or not. 🎺 He is still new to our program but we will soon designate hand-signals in order to establish better communication with the giant goofball.

The other thing to know about a dog like Mossimo is that his large size could cause hip issues in the future. Proper nutrition will be essential to his all-around good health. At over 100 Lbs, the cost of quality food needs to be taken into consideration.

Physical Description:

His build resembles one of the Presa Canario. However, without a pedigree in hand, we can't guarantee his breeding. Salt & pepper would be an unusual coat pattern for a Presa and a predominantly white coat is a disqualification in the breed.  It's very possible that Mossimo is another Molosser type or simply a Mastiff/Bully mix, possibly the result from breeders trying to create a so-called "XL Bully".

Mossimo is over 100 Lbs so please make sure to have your landlord's approval, if you do not own your house, before applying. We do not recommend this gentle giant in a condo, apartment setup or townhouse, as he can be quite vocal when home alone.

Current Living Situation:

Mossimo is currently staying at MPR shelter and adapting to life under our care. Our volunteers are head-over-heels in love with him, which definitely pleases him because he's a big loverboy himself.

He keeps his kennel clean and doesn't destroy his bedding.  He uses the doggy-door to potty in his outside run or waits for his turn in the yard.

He ignores the dogs barking around him and doesn't seem interested in looking for any trouble. All he wants is people's attention. He is very needy and doesn't like being alone at all.

Personality:

A big lovable goof ❤️ He is clingy, affectionate, easy-going, and sometimes pushy with his attention. He likes to put his huge paws on your shoulders and can reach great height when he stands up. He also loves to shake and "hold your hand". Being ignored breaks his heart. He's a huge cry-baby who has no idea how intimidating he looks.

Behavior with people:

As of now, Moss has been nothing but a sweet baby with everyone he meets. Mastiffs are known to be protective of their family but Mossimo has not made a special connection with anyone in particular at the shelter yet. So he greets everyone he meets like a long-lost friend. This could change in the future as he bonds closely with his loved-ones. We recommend that anyone interested in adopting Mossimo reads about Mastiff breeds and Presa type dogs before applying for our big Momo. He could become a formidable guardian one day and will require responsible ownership.

Behavior with children:

Unknown.  As explained above, he loves to give "bear hugs".. and we stress BEAR! Even though he has no malice, he is huge and heavy. A home with small children is not recommended.

Behavior with other dogs:

While at the city pound briefs introduction attempts were made, and the response was negative. He was stiff and unfriendly towards males and so-so with females. It is highly recommended that Mossimo be an only pet.

Behavior with other animals:

Unknown. A home with cats or other small animals is not recommended.

Addition Information:

Mossino's beauty runs deep! This dog's heart is as large as his head. This is a striking dog that will make you proud everywhere you take him. A head turner and a people-lover. You will always feel safe with a dog like him at your side but he will need to be protected too! He's too gorgeous to be left unsupervised, as a dog like him could attract individuals with bad intentions. While you can count on him to "look" the part and deter people when needed, he's the one who will need to count on you to protect him for the rest of his life to make sure he never falls in the wrong hands.

Even if you can’t adopt this sweetheart, you can still help by donating for their care.
