Before applying for a dog, please take a moment to review our Adoption Information & Procedures
Some of the dogs in our program are adopted before we get to know them. Some stay longer but require several weeks to show their character. Some dogs receive additional evaluations and training by professionals if needed.
We work hard to provide as much information as possible, but the process is not perfect. Our goal is to give the dogs the best chance to stay in their home for the rest of their lives so we are genuine regarding what we know about them. For MPR, quality of our placements takes precedence over a quick turnaround.
We do our very best to update the dogs' bios as quickly as we can. In some cases, dogs are adopted before we are able to revise their listing.
Please do not contact MPR via email or messenger to inquire about a dog’s personality and/or temperament, compatibility with other pets, etc. The volunteers in charge of replying to general requests are not the same as those handling and evaluating the dogs. They will not be able to answer your questions.
Missouri Pit Bull Rescue makes no express or implied warranty, representation or promise to the age, health, breed, habits, disposition, behaviors, obedience, or safety of the dogs in our program. Our assessments are subjective and based on information we receive when selecting the dogs for our program, as well as observations and reports from our volunteers and caretakers. Adopters understand that no one can predict how a dog will act or react under all circumstances and situations.
Background Info:
Tembo was brought into the city shelter as a stray and was never claimed. This sweet boy came in with fly bitten ears and a rough and brittle coat that suggest he may have lived a life outdoors. We have no official information regarding his past and upbringing but we know his future looks quite bright now that he is under our care.
Adoption Fee: $175
Breed: AmStaff Mix
Sex: Male
Age: 1-3 yrs
Weight: 75+ lbs
Health Condition:
Tembo came to MPR after most likely leaving a life of neglect. He had fly strikes on his ears but they are in the healing process now. This big lug came to us slightly underweight but is gaining everyday! He is otherwise healthy and ready to be spoiled in a forever home!
Physical Description:
Tembo is slightly on the larger side for Pit Bulls and has the appearance of an Amstaff or with perhaps some American Bulldog somewhere in his background. He still has a little bit of weight to gain to get to healthy stature but is currently around 75lbs. He has big soft paws to match his big physique! Tembo has a blue coat with a white underbelly and a "frosted tip" white streak on his nose.
Like his namesake, Tembo has some elephant eques rolls on his face and neck that are perfect for snuggling and grabbing onto as you are receiving his already famous kisses. This sweet lover boy has some pink spots on his nose and chin that make it look like he has been drinking some strawberry milk and forgot to wipe his face off! Tembo is a strikingly handsome and impressive looking dog with such soulful eyes that pictures do not do justice!
Current Living Situation:
Tembo is learning the good life and currently resides at our shelter. Even while most likely being an outdoor dog in the past, he keeps a clean kennel and knows to use his outdoor area for the bathroom. Mr Casanova is a volunteers' favorite at the shelter!! Stealing hearts left and right!
Personality:
Personality is where Tembo truly shines. He is an admirable testament to the loving nature this breed has to offer! This big guy is a happy dog with a chill and laid back demeanor. He loves to greet you with a full body hug and lots of kisses as if he had been waiting to see you for months. Once all those formalities are out the way he is ready to chill and relax with you. Movie night?? Yes, Please! Tembo will gladly accept "stage 5 clinger" status with his forever family. With all this immense love for humans and giving affection he is someone's future "soul dog"! Is it you?
Behavior with people:
To no surprise, Tembo has immediately become a favorite among our shelter volunteers. Tembo knows no stranger and is the last dog you would want as a guard dog as he greets everyone with a big smile and wagging tail just waiting for the chance to give kisses. One of Tembo's favorite things to do is sit with you on the couch while you pet him and he pays you back in big, slobbery, Pittie kisses. While he does love giving affection, he is responsive when when you are ready for him to stop. He will then just chill with his head in your lap dreaming of his best friend (YOU)!
Behavior with children:
While we are still learning about Tembo, he hasn't given us any reason so far to believe he would no do well in a home with well behaved, respectful kids.
Behavior with other dogs:
At this time we do not know how Tembo is around other dogs but will update as we learn more about this big hunk. At the shelter he appears unreactive towards the dogs kenneled next to him. That said, he's a big impressive guy and might be intimidating for another dog.
Behavior with other animals:
Tembo has not yet shown any reactivity to wildlife at the shelter but we are still learning more everyday with him and will update as we know more.
Training:
Our volunteers are actively working with Tembo on basic commands such as sit, down, wait, and touch. With Tembo's eagerness to please he should be a quick learner. He would love to continue his training with his forever family!!
Best Attribute:
While Tembo is a handsome big boy, his warmhearted and adoring personality is sure to win his future family over! Tembo is the type of dog that will turn any rough work day around as soon as you walk through the door. This dog seems to have had a bit of a rough start in life but has so much love to give and does not let a rocky past keep him down for a second. Tembo's positive outlook on life is infectious and it is near impossible to not smile and laugh when interacting with this big squishmallow of a dog!
Even if you can’t adopt this sweetheart, you can still help by donating for their care.
