A good-natured sea sponge who resembles a rectangular kitchen sponge. SpongeBob has a childlike enthusiasm for life, fun-loving nature and happy-go-lucky personality
This brave dog obviously had a very hard life. We dont have a lot of info about his past but the condition in which he landed at the city pound indicates neglects and possible abuse. Despite his rough journey, the dog has THE most beautiful soul.

He has old scars; Some of them might have been caused by an embedded collar or some serious injury to his neck. Seems to have happened some time ago. He was thin when he arrived to us and had a harsh coat. He looks much better now.
Spongebob is currently undergoing heartworm treatment. He had a severe case so we are doing a longer treatment with him. We expect him to be back on his feet by mid summer.
He's gorgeous in a very endearing way. Those freckles are to die but but the sweetness in his eyes is the most attractive in him. He has a very soft expression that reflects his sweet and loving disposition. We're in love!
Sponge is soaking up love and affection at MPR shelter. He seems so relieved by the good care and comfort he is receiving. We keep him in our meds room instead of in a kennel, where its peaceful and quiet. He loves his couch! He also has access to a large wire crate that we keep opened for him and he likes to lay in there too.
He has a doggy-door and his own private yard with privacy fence. He loves sunbathing on the patio. He uses the doggy-door to let himself in and out and doesn't have accidents inside.
He hasn't destroyed anything in the room or got into stuff he shouldn't. He loves to lay on his couch and chew a toy or watch out the window. He's very, very well behaved :-)
We cant begin to describe what a sweetheart this amazing boy is. Volunteers are seriously smitten and if Sponge could share a home with another dog, he would have already been adopted. We believe he needs to be an only pet and everyone at MPR already has at least 1 dog.
Sponge is a people-lover with a very soft and gentle demeanor. He's affectionate, polite and incredibly sweet. He loves to cuddle or just lay his big head on your lap.
He is not shy or overly submissive but he is definitely not defiant either. He's a confident dog who had a hard life and was mistreated. Instead of holding a grudge towards humans, he is now relieved to be able to share his affection with people. It feels as if he waited all his life to finally be able to love and be loved.
Spongebob's energy level is low but slightly increasing as he's getting rid of the worms in his heart and lungs. We believe he will become a little more active but he certainly doesn't come across as a high energy dog. The disease did weaken him though, and he is slowly regaining his strength now that he can breath better.
Behavior with people:
A total sweetheart with the kindest soul. This is the kind of dog people have in their lifetime that leaves a strong impression. He is gentle, well behaved and so loving. Calm, affectionate and comfortable with everyone. His eyes smile and light up when he sees his love-ones. This dog makes obvious efforts to communicate with people and is very easy to read.
Behavior with children:
SB hasn't been exposed to children since being in our care. He has such a gentle soul and good manners though, that we dont anticipate any problems. We will be strict with his placement however, because he deserves the best. A home with children is fine provided the little ones are respectful and know how to treat a dog appropriately.
Behavior with other dogs:
He needs a home as the only pet. While he is not going out of his way to start conflicts, he is clearly not fond of other dogs. For some this might be seen as Spongebob's downfall. For us, we simply want to give the dog a carefree environment where he wont have to worry about other pets. He most likely had bad experiences with other dogs in the past. Intentional or not, we dont know and it doesn't matter. He's very uncomfortable with other dogs now and we dont want to force him in a situation that will cause him stress.
Behavior with other animals:
We are currently focusing on treating Heartworm disease so haven't begin any training. He is naturally well-behaved and very easy to handle.
He had a couple accidents when he first came to us and marked a few times right after being neutered, which is expected. He hasn't done it since.
Sponge is eager to please and responsive. He does well in a car. We're not sure how he acts on a leash. We will update his bio once we know him better.
This is a special dog whom we hope will attract someone who understands his amazing gift. He has the kind of heart and soul that reaches deep. He's a gentleman dog who deserves the same kindness he gives so candidly.
