Before applying for a dog, please take a moment to review our Adoption Information & Procedures

Some of the dogs in our program are adopted before we get to know them. Some stay longer but require several weeks to show their character. Some dogs receive additional evaluations and training by professionals if needed.

We work hard to provide as much information as possible but the process is not perfect. Our goal is to give the dogs the best chance to stay in their home for the rest of their lives, so we will be honest regarding what we know about them. For MPR, quality of adoptions takes precedence over a quick turnaround.

We do our very best to update the dogs bios as quickly as we can. In many cases, dogs are adopted before we are able to revise their listing. Please do not contact MPR via email or messenger to inquire about a dog’s personality and/or temperament, compatibility with other pets, etc. The volunteers in charge of replying to general requests are not the same as those handling and evaluating the dogs. They will not not be able to answer your questions.

Missouri Pit Bull Rescue makes no express or implied warranty, representation or promise to the age, health, breed, habits, disposition, behaviors, obedience, or safety of the dogs in our program. Our assessments are subjective, and based on information we receive when selecting the dogs for our program, as well as observations and reports from our volunteers and caretakers. Adopters understand that no one can predict how a dog will react under all circumstances and situations.

Background Info:

Sookie was abandoned at the Swope Park dog park and subsequently brought to the city shelter. We dont know anything about her previous life. We named her after the fun-loving character in the Gilmore Girls because of her chubby face and good nature.

Adoption Fee: $ 200
Breed: Pit Bull
Sex: Female
Age: 2-5
Weight: 60-70

Health Condition:

Sookie is healthy and working on losing a few pounds. She is ready for adoption.

Physical Description:

A sweet-potato in color and stature, Sookie is stocky and has soulful brown eyes.

Current Living Situation:

Sookie is fostered in a home with two adults, no kids but an altered male 1 yo Pit mix.

There's a yard with a privacy fence.

Although her foster parents tell us that she is crate-trained, Sookie can be left loose in the house when home alone with no problems. She has not displayed any destructive behaviors. She chews only on toys provided.

She sleeps soundly through the night, snoring loudly. She has slept in her crate overnight, on the couch, and in her foster parents' bed.

Personality:

Sookie is a calm and affectionate dog who is well-suited to living in a home. She walks well on a 6’ leash with minimal pulling. She will pull strongly if a squirrel moves quickly in front of her. She is non-reactive to other people on lead. She is either non reactive or will pull some and bark at another dog while on lead, but can be redirected with a treat.

She sleeps frequently and prefers to be on or next to a person while awake. She is highly affectionate, enjoying to cuddle and is borderline obsessive about licking and kissing people’s faces. She can be hard to deter when trying to lick, but never misbehaves when pushed off or forcefully told no.

She enjoys being outside in the yard when accompanied by a person, but otherwise prefers to be indoors. She can be stubborn when asking her to go outside, but will follow you out.

She enjoys being pet/massaged. She grunts and snorts in an endearing fashion when she is pet.

She is glad to ride along in h car for an errand, but may bark at dogs outside when driving.

When Sookie can sense another dog opposite the backyard fence, she will bark to get our attention. She will stop and come inside when commanded.

Sookie’s primarily traits is her desire to show and receive affection. She has never shown aggression. She enjoys short excursions and walks. However, she is equally keen to nap the day away. She is a dog who loves people and being around them. She is eager to please. While your attention and affection is her primary goal, she does not sulk or misbehave to get it.

Behavior with people:

Sookie was timid when meeting people in the shelter setting. However, since then we have observed her to be happy to meet new adults. We would describe her as outgoing with people, friendly, loving and comfortable.

Behavior with children:

She has not encountered any children during her time in foster care. She is gentle when greeting adults on and off leash. She wants to lick them after first sniffing. We believe she’d be fond of children,  tolerant and enjoy being near them. The only piece to understand is that with her desire to “kiss” and her weight, it could be frightening to a smaller child to be pinned underneath her while she proceeds in an adoring face-wash.

Behavior with other dogs:

Sookie is fostered in a home with a young and playful male pit mix. She is far more interested in humans than him. She is however, tolerant (for the most part) and occasionally playful. She offers appropriate corrections when disinterested in play or when he attempts to steal a chew toy. She will engage in games of chase and wrestle with him — never spilling over beyond play. They’ve even been known to cuddle each other during naps. Still, her primary approach is one of separate coexistence.

Behavior with other animals:

Sookie has shown moderate prey drive; attempting to chase squirrels when on a walk on leash. She is easily redirected.

Training:

Sookie knows “sit” and will do so for food and at the door to be let in and out. She is housebroken. Sookie has good manners in a crate, though somewhat reluctant to enter. She can be coaxed using a treat.

Sookie is eager to please, but not overtly food-motivated. Her leash skills are good—walking at a heel the majority of the time.

Best Attributes:

Sookie is an affectionate and accommodating companion who is friendly with everyone. Her passions are sleep, affection, and comfort. She is very easy to please and eager to love.
