Luna - Available
Moose - In Hospice Foster

Before applying for a dog, please take a moment to review our Adoption Information & Procedures

Some of the dogs in our program are adopted before we get to know them. Some stay longer but require several weeks to show their character. Some dogs receive additional evaluations and training by professionals if needed.

We work hard to provide as much information as possible, but the process is not perfect. Our goal is to give the dogs the best chance to stay in their home for the rest of their lives so we are genuine regarding what we know about them. For MPR, quality of our placements takes precedence over a quick turnaround.

We do our very best to update the dogs' bios as quickly as we can. In some cases, dogs are adopted before we are able to revise their listing.

Please do not contact MPR via email or messenger to inquire about a dog’s personality and/or temperament, compatibility with other pets, etc. The volunteers in charge of replying to general requests are not the same as those handling and evaluating the dogs. They will not be able to answer your questions.

Missouri Pit Bull Rescue makes no express or implied warranty, representation or promise to the age, health, breed, habits, disposition, behaviors, obedience, or safety of the dogs in our program. Our assessments are subjective and based on information we receive when selecting the dogs for our program, as well as observations and reports from our volunteers and caretakers. Adopters understand that no one can predict how a dog will act or react under all circumstances and situations.

Background Info:

Moose was adopted from MPR about 10 years ago into a family with children. Soon after a sister, Luna, was adopted from the city shelter and they have been inseparable ever since! Unfortunately, the family underwent major changes and one party kept the dogs in the divorce. Recently, Moose and Luna were found wandering the streets of Omaha when the other party and MPR quickly sprung into action. This party was unable to take the dogs as they have another MPR alumni who must be an only pet. Both dogs were picked up and safely transported back to MPR. They are bonded and we had no intention of splitting them up, even though Luna was not originally adopted from MPR.  After coming to the shelter Moose was rapidly declining, we didn't think it was fair for him to live out his final days in distress, we were able to secure a loving hospice foster for him.  This was the best option for his mental state.  Luna is receiving extra love and our attention is now focused to finding her a loving forever home, hopefully with a compatible male companion.

Health Condition:

Our dear Moose was diagnosed with Acanthomatous Ameloblastoma, a form of mouth cancer tumors that had taken over his lower right jaw and gum line. His previous adopters' vet found them once they had used up all the blood supply and gone necrotic. In these situations, removal of these tumors and the surrounding area, including bone, is necessary so Moose had to have a portion of his jaw removed. The tumors unfortunately can pop up again, and that's exactly what we found upon his arrival at MPR, except this time the tumors are on the upper left front jaw. We are unable to remove the new tumors in this location as this area includes the nasal cavity. These tumors are slow growing so we don't have any idea how short or long our sweet Moose will have. What we do know is that this happy hunk and his adoring and healthy partner, Luna, deseve nothing but the best place to live out their glory years! We have made the call with the previous adopter's input to care for him with pain management, supplements, and tons of spoiling love!

Physical Description:

Moose is a stout guy with the cutest round black eyes that stare deep into your soul. Moose's tongue tends to hang out the side of his mouth since his jaw was removed from his previous bout with cancer. He has been working hard on shedding a few extra pounds that he was carrying around upon his arrival at the shelter. He's found a spring in his step again! His age shows in his hips sometimes, but he gets around well and can still jump!

Current Living Situation:

Moose and Luna have been settling in to the shelter life. They are separated when left alone, and we can tell those times of separation have worn on them. These two would love a home where they can be out more with a family in a more normal setting.

They are kept in their very own tiny house dubbed "The Dawghouse" on the shelter property. As is a best practice with Pit Bulls, it is safest to separate them when not supervised in case they get into an old married couple disagreement, so they are kept in the Dawghouse together where they can still see each other but are separated when alone. They are proving to be wonderful and respectful residents keeping their area clean. They are well behaved, quiet, and patient.

Personality:

Moose is goofy and stoic all in the same beautiful face! He loves to explore the yard and smell all the things! Both Moose and Luna enjoy going on walks but they really love to lay next to you, and each other, and feel content in their safe space. Moose will let you know when it's time to eat, and Luna will make sure you heard him! If having an easy going, lovable pair fits in your family then this is your dynamic duo! They are easy going and while they enjoy their walks and outside time, they can be the ultimate couch potatoes! A little bit of anxiety can show when a storm is rolling in, but we have not seen anything yet that causes concern.

Behavior with people:

These two have never met a stranger!! They are outgoing, friendly, and well behaved when meeting new people. They love their humans, as Pit Bulls are bred to do. They think everyone should see them as the amazing puppers they are! Hugs and snuggles are a must with these two!

Behavior with children:

Moose and Luna were in a home with little kids to now teenagers for the 10 years they were in the family home. They LOVED those kids and the kids still love them and enjoy getting pupdates on these two! We think a home with respectful and breed-educated kids could work for these sweethearts.

Behavior with other dogs:

Moose and Luna are very bonded and prefer each other's company over the company of other dogs. We do know that if Moose passes before Luna, she will need a new compatible male to spend her days with. She does not like being apart from Moose, even for a walk!

Behavior with other animals:

They do not seem to mind animals outside of the fenced in yard, but when in close proximity they prefer to have just each other around.

Training:

The amazing thing about senior dogs is that most of the training is complete! These two lovebirds have home life down pat! Insert a comfy couch and some outside sunshine naps, and they'll be happy! They wait patiently to be fed separately, and have been doing well containing their excitement about going on walks.

Best Attribute:

Moose and Luna's best attributes are their absolute zest for life! They just want to be loved and shower you with love right back! One would never know that Moose has a limited amount of time left as he grabs every day like he is a puppy still. Luna has nothing but happiness that fills a room to the ceiling too! The really are special dogs and quite the duo.

Even if you can’t adopt this sweetheart, you can still help by donating for their care.
