Celtic goddess of the sun, endurance, inspiration and forgiveness.
Rhiannon was found as a stray and brought to city shelter. Everyone at the pound was appalled by her condition. Rhiannon however, was all smiles, tail wags & full of kisses. Her hardship was immediately brought to our attention & we simply couldn't turn her down. We had to give her a powerful name that illustrated her resilience. She is earning every bit of it!
Adoption Fee: $200
Breed: Pit Bull
Age: 5-10 yrs
Weight: 50-75 lbs
Needless to say, Rhiannon was a mess when she arrived in our program. God only knows what she endured in her life but sever neglect, abuse and poor care left her with various medical issues. We have been tackling her health problems one after another. In just a few months, she looks like a new dog already. See what she looked like when she arrived to us:
We first fixed the huge hernia underneath her tail. Our vet did extensive reconstructive surgery and it was a success!
lung cancer: We then took care of malnutrition, intestinal parasites and finally, heartworm disease. Due to the poor condition she came in, Rhiannon received three injections to get rid of the heartworms. She did her 6 weeks of rest and we then thought she was out of the woods when the worse news came to us; Rhiannon was diagnosed with lung cancer!!!
You can only imagine our pain and sadness. Thankfully, Rhi has THE most awesome foster mom in the world, who is committed to giving her the best possible life until the end. The prognostic is vague. X-rays revealed that the cancer is slowly progressing and our veterinarian provided a guarded outcome. A few months to a few years.
Rhiannon is safe and loved where she is. If the end of her road is near, she will leave this world loved and happy. If she does have a few years left however, finding her a home would allow us to continue helping dogs as her temporary mom has been an active foster for several years and is not about to give up. We just need to be up-front and let any potential adopter know that cant tell how much longer this sweet girl has.
Needless to say, Rhiannon's medical care has been extensive and expensive. We could use all the help we can get for her care. Please share the love by donating for Rhiannon.
She is not the dejected, skinny, scarred up, maltreated dog she used to be, but she isn't quite ready for the next Miss Universe contest either. The beauty is in her heart and it sure is a gorgeous heart.
Rhiannon is on the large side for a female, stocky, and big-boned. She has an adorable overbite that makes her pretty much impossible to resist. We love her silly-goose face and it suits her personality. She also has a droopy eye, sagging lips and a huge tongue, that doesn't quite fit in her mouth... She drools.....
Yes, she's a mess... Yes, she's funny looking .... Yes, she has cancer.... But she's happy and she doesn't care what she looks like. We knew when we met her that her appearance might work against her but we hoped that someone would see the same thing we saw in her eyes and would not let her exterior be a deterrent. Rhiannon is BEAUTIFUL on the inside!
Rhiannon is fostered in a loving home, out in the country. There is one human adult in her foster home and one 7 yo male Pit Bull. Rhi is crated when foster mom is at work and at night.
The property has a medium yard with low chain link fence. It is surrounded by farm lands, with horses at close proximity. Rhiannon does very well in that environment and is no trouble at all. Please keep in mind that she is still in recovery, so exploration and exercise is still limited at this time.
Adversity is a fact of life. Resilience is that ineffable quality that allows a living-being to be knocked down by life and come back at least as strong as before. Rather than letting difficulties or failure overcome them and drain their resolve, they find a way to rise from the ashes. Meet Rhiannon!
Even after tremendous misfortunes, Rhiannon was able to endorse the change-of-course that came upon her when she was rescued, and move toward, achieving her most precious goal; Find love!
This dog's ability to forgive is remarkable. She doesn't hold a grudge what's so ever. She is soooo sweet, loving and forgiving. An inspiration to anyone who needs help moving on after a tough hardship.
Rhiannon's level of energy is on the low side but she is not lazy by any means. Just very easy-going and easy to handle.
Her personalty is well-balanced and predictable. She does perk-up when something piques her interest but is easy to redirect.
Rhiannon does fine on car rides and is overall well behaved and very easy to please. You can only imagine that after such hard life, anything pleasant feels like heaven. She's a very grateful dog.
Behavior with people:
Friendly, outgoing, polite and well-behaved. She loves everyone the same way, regardless of age, size, sex, color and political affiliation ;-)
Rhiannon has no reticence with strangers what-so-ever. This dog is elated to meet amicable people and waited all her life for a friendly face. She just cant get enough new friends now.
Behavior with children:
Rhiannon met her foster mom's 8 yo old niece and as expected, did great with her. We believe she would do awesome in a house with kids. She hasn't been around younger children but foster mom describes her as very gentle, serene and super sweet.
Behavior with other dogs:
Rhi has met her foster brother and does very well with him. She wants to play and is easily redirected. That said, Rhiannon seems dominant towards other dogs, especially females. Since she was most likely used as a breeding-machine, her experience with other dogs might not have always been positive. A home with a compatible male is not ruled out, but she will not be placed with another female.
Behavior with other animals:
Hasn't met any cats since being in her foster home. She is nonreactive to the horses nearby. Foster mom thinks she will be low prey-drive but were not sure until she feels better.
Working on crate training, house training and basic commands. Rhiannon is eager-to-please and really wants to become a well-behaved family companion. It's just a matter of learning house manners. She most likely lived outside all her life and was never thought how to behave in a house. She needs to learn all about the good life now and is soaking it up.
Such a sweet, loving and compassionate lady. Despite all she's been through, Rhiannon only wants to love and be loved. And while some people might be put off by her appearance and her medical issues, we think she is GORGEOUS... And so worth the trouble. Please give her a chance?
