We found Elfie in June 2016, laying on a hill beside the highway. She had been hit by a car, and couldn’t stand up.
At the emergency room, we learned that she had a broken shoulder blade. She was also skinned up from head to tail – poor, sweet darling!!

We found Elfie in June 2016, laying on a hill beside the highway. She had been hit by a car, and couldn’t stand up. At the emergency room, we learned that she had a broken shoulder blade. She was also skinned up from head to tail – poor, sweet darling!! Even with all the pain she was in, and having to be picked up when hurting so badly, she never threatened to bite, or even growled -- she handled everything with the same sweet nature she’s shown through everything!! She is all healed up now, and is also spayed and is on heartworm prevention. She still has a tiny scar on top of her head from one of the wounds, but it is not ugly – just a spot where the hair didn’t grow back in. The vets felt that she was 6 or 7 months old, as she hadn’t come into season yet, so she would now be 8 or 9 months old. She weighs about 30 pounds.
Elfie is housebroken and crate trained. She sleeps quietly in her crate at night, and also stays in the crate when I’m not home. She’s living in a house with 3-5 other dogs (I have 3 of my own, and babysit 2 more 5 times a week), and one indoor and two outdoor cats. She is pretty curious about the cat, but hasn’t been aggressive towards her. However, I’m not sure I’d leave her alone loose in the house with the cat!! She’s SUPER sweet and LOVES her stuffed toys. She constantly wags her tail – well, really her whole back half wags!! She doesn’t seem to show any food aggression. I haven’t stuck my hand in her dish while she’s eating, but I have pet her, and she’s not guarded at all. I feed all of my dogs separately, but I do let them lick my dishes sometimes, and she will share with the other dogs without showing any aggression. The ONLY concern I have with her at all is her reaction to dominant little dogs. I have a small female that is NOT very well balanced, and Elfie has pinned her down a couple of times, after the little one attacked her. To her credit, though, that is ALL she has done - she didn’t fight back! It has only happened twice, and it’s been several weeks since it happened. I also have two other small dogs, and there has NEVER been any issue with Elfie and them, or the other two big dogs. She’s comfortable living in the house, but also enjoys laying around outside in the yard.
Elfie’s very sensitive to training – if you just speak to her in a strong voice, she’s heartbroken – not timid, but VERY correctable! She’s a SUPER fast learner!!! She already knows how to fetch, and to ‘give’ the toy to you. She’s going to start an obedience class in a couple of weeks if she hasn’t found her loving home by then. She already sits on command, and also waits for her food dish to be put down. She rides really well in the car, either in or out of the crate. We have crates that they usually ride in, but when she was injured, it was too painful to put her in and out of the crate, so she rode like a champ in the back seat!
I haven’t had Elfie around a lot of people, but when we rescued her, she crawled over to us, wagging her tail. She’s been really good with the vets, and when my Dad stopped by a while back, she walked up to greet him, so I think she’s trusting, and not stand-offish with people. I think she’ll be fantastic with kids – more playmates for her!! She’s not shy with other dogs, either. I would say she’s somewhere in the middle between being dominant and submissive. When she plays with my bigger dog, she’s sometimes the ‘aggressor’ but then she’s the one who gets rolled on the ground, and there has NEVER been a confrontation of any kind between them, so she accepts being dominated, also. She really just wants to be loved and to play!!
Elfie’s basic personality is pretty quiet. She is a puppy so has her playful moments, but I think as she grows up, she’ll be pretty mellow. She has not destroyed anything, other than a stuffed toy or two. She really just doesn’t seem to get into much trouble! All in all, Elfie’s just an adorably sweet, extremely personable LOVE who wants to be your best bud!!!! She would be a lap dog, if she could get away with it!! After the terrible start she got in life, she truly deserves to find a safe, kind and loving home!!
I’m in SW Missouri, but I’m willing to help with transportation for a great home for her … I make frequent trips to Kansas City, and also to Dallas, so I’m used to road trips!
