Bonzo was found at 12:00 a.m. tied to a post outside the food pantry at the Catholic Cathedral downtown. The women who manages the food pantry and a friend of ours took him in and cared for him. She called us and we picked him up. We took him to Union Hill Animal Hospital and had him vetted and chipped.
Breed: Pit Bull
Age: 1.5 y/o
Weight: 40 lbs.
Color: White & Cream
Good with dogs: Some
Good with cats: NA
Living Situation: Bonzo has been with us for a week. We named him Bonzo. He is in a home with 3 other dogs and 2 adults. All 3 of our dogs were rescued from KC Pet Project. So far they have all gotten along. We live in the city and they have a fence yard to run a round. We have walked the dogs together and take them to a local sports field. We let the others off lead, but keep Bonzo on the lead. He walks nicely on a lead with very little pulling. He does well in a car. We only kennel him when we both leave. The dogs sleep on the bed or on the sofas. The dogs are rarely left at home as we can work from home.
Personality: We call him Mr. Congeniality. He play tug of war and chases the other dogs. With 4 dogs in the house it is a continual playgroup during the day. At night all of the dogs relax. Bonzo likes to make himself comfortable on the couch and watch t.v. He sleeps through the night. He has not been around kids playing, but as I stated earlier he has been exposed to kids and seems to like them. He does get excited around visitors, but we are working on that with all of our dogs. He does have a prey drive, but he is encouraged by the other dogs to chase squirrels.
Behavior with people: He does very well with people. We have taken him on a few outings and he’s been very friendly. He was around children and he did very well letting them pet him and hug him. We will continue to socialize him with various people. He attaches easily to humans and has attached to Adrian.
Behavior with other dogs: He’s in a home with 3 dogs. So far they have all gotten along. He was exposed to other dogs at the vet and didn’t react to them. While he gets along with our dogs, I would say he's dog selective.
Training: He has been with us for a week and appears to be housebroken. We are working on the commands sit and down. He does respond when corrected and will submit. He is treat motivated and seems to want to please.
Best Attribute: Bonzo loves to cuddle and is very affectionate.
Bonzo has had a behavioral assessment by a knowledgeable pit bull trainer. In summary, there were no placement concerns seen and no obvious restrictions on placement.
