Before applying for a dog, please take a moment to review our Adoption Information & Procedures
Some of the dogs in our program are adopted before we get to know them. Some stay longer but require several weeks to show their character. Some dogs receive additional evaluations and training by professionals if needed.
We work hard to provide as much information as possible, but the process is not perfect. Our goal is to give the dogs the best chance to stay in their home for the rest of their lives so we are genuine regarding what we know about them. For MPR, quality of our placements takes precedence over a quick turnaround.
We do our very best to update the dogs' bios as quickly as we can. In some cases, dogs are adopted before we are able to revise their listing.
Please do not contact MPR via email or messenger to inquire about a dog’s personality and/or temperament, compatibility with other pets, etc. The volunteers in charge of replying to general requests are not the same as those handling and evaluating the dogs. They will not be able to answer your questions.
Missouri Pit Bull Rescue makes no express or implied warranty, representation or promise to the age, health, breed, habits, disposition, behaviors, obedience, or safety of the dogs in our program. Our assessments are subjective and based on information we receive when selecting the dogs for our program, as well as observations and reports from our volunteers and caretakers. Adopters understand that no one can predict how a dog will act or react under all circumstances and situations.
Buchanan's story is unfortunately way too common in Kansas City. He spent his life living on a chain, neglected, unloved, and abused. Each time he tried to escape, his owner would claim him from the pound and put him back in his dire situation. Eventually, the worst happened; Buchanan landed at the city shelter one more time but with most of his front leg gone 😱
Adoption Fee: $150
Age: 7-10 yrs
Weight: 75-85 lbs
The injury was extremely gruesome. The bone was exposed, and the poor dog had been left in agony with no medical care when animal control finally intervened. Thankfully this time, the owner was not allowed to get him back. This is where his journey with MPR begins, with the promise to find him the most loving and caring home a dog can have.
We estimate his age at about 8 but it is hard to tell. Buchanan didn't have a good life and might look older than he is. His leg was successfully amputated to the shoulder, and he has adapted to being a tripod like a champ. He must have been so relieved after his surgery. Our vet is still in the process of assessing a few minor things such as the growth in his eye. We will post an update when we know more.
Bucky is a big boy and might have some Bull Mastiff in him. He has a huuuuuuge teddy-bear head and the most loving eyes. His golden fawn coat is soft and healthy. He looks so much better in person. His pictures don't do him justice at all. He's actually a beautiful Adonis and turns heads everywhere he goes.
Current Living Situation:
Luckily for him, we found this sweetheart a foster home right away, so he didn't have to be at the shelter. For a dog that lived such a terrible life, Buchanan is proving to be a heck of a gentleman. He shares his temporary home with two adults, no kids, and no other pets. The house and yard are small but that's not a problem for Bucky. While big in size, this gentle giant doesn't require much exercise and is very easy to please.
He was first kenneled overnight or when his foster parents were not home, but over time he demonstrated that he could be left loose in the house with no issues. He doesn't bother or touch anything. He sleeps on the sofa at night with a couple blankets. He goes on very small, short walks to help build-up muscle in his 3 remaining legs.
Buchanan is a big, lazy lover boy who enjoys lying in the sunshine watching people. He does get anxious with certain sounds but quickly gets over it with reassurance from his loved ones. He is talkative with everything (people, other animals, cars, etc.) The more he becomes comfortable with a noise (like ambulance sirens or loud cars), the less he worries. He's an adaptable dog who longs for a calm, comfortable, and safe life.
Bucky has a playful and fun-loving side to him too and enjoys playing hide & seek. He also does really well riding in the car and seems to enjoy it.
A note from foster mom: "Despite his age, he is a very fun and loving boy. We play together by me hiding in the house somewhere, and he has to come find me, which he loves. He has stuffed toys but doesn't seem too interested in them at the moment. He does occasionally chew on his bones though."
Behavior with people:
While Bucky loves everyone he meets, he seems particularly fond of men. He loves to cuddle with his foster dad and enjoys his attention. Bucky has met several family members and was nothing but a sweetheart with everyone.
Behavior with children:
Unknown. There are no children in his foster home and Buchanan hasn't met any kid since being in our care.
Behavior with other dogs:
Buchanan was briefly introduced to a submissive female while at the city shelter and we were told he did well with her. He has not been around other dogs since being with MPR.
Behavior with other animals:
Bucky barks at squirrels and cats that he sees from afar. He seems more curious than anything else, but we haven't seen him interact with a cat.
Buchanan appears to be housebroken. He's had no accidents inside the house or in his crate.
He knows sit, stay, and foster family is working on commands outside when other neighbors' dogs are in the yard. He's definitely a little stubborn with paying attention to commands when other animals are in sight, but not out of control or unmanageable.
This dog has suffered the worst abuse at the hands of humans but still loves everyone he meets. His capacity to forgive is amazing and inspiring. He has a remarkable joy for life despite his disability. As if this was not enough, his light-hearted nonchalant personality makes him unique and impossible to resist.
Even if you can’t adopt this sweetheart, you can still help by donating for their care.
